Merck today announced that the FDA has approved Lyfnua (gefapixant) for the treatment of refractory or unexplained chronic cough in adults. Gefapixant is a selective P2X3 receptor antagonist that demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in 24-hour cough frequency in the Phase 3 COUGH-1 and COUGH-2 trials. This approval represents the first FDA-approved treatment specifically for refractory or unexplained chronic cough and provides relief for patients who have failed other treatments. Taste disturbance was the most common adverse event, occurring in approximately 69% of patients.
